Kanchan Couture VIP Fashion Show at MINI SPOT: MINI-mal Chic

‘Twas a hot, humid Thursday evening in Hong Kong and rain was hanging thick in the air...  A designer set out to do the one thing she loves, again, to try to win over the public with her creative flair, razzling work, and dazzling clothes. Kanchan Couture and MINI Hong Kong teamed up to have a VIP Fashion Show at MINI SPOT. 

The creative minds of MINI HONG KONG and Kanchan Couture came together a few weeks ago to organize a very special evening: MINI-mal Chic, inspired by the VOGUE September issue.

Minimal elegance this season is acheived with single hues, accompanied with fun signature peices. We turned back to full skirt silhouettes, exotic hair and sexy makeup and showed a collection of Kanchan Couture’s demi-couture range on the 2nd of September, 2010.

I think all my friends read my last fashion show blog, because this time, I was showered with friends and love, who came to support all the hard work that went into organizing this VIP night.

This time before the event, was not as stressful as the last time. We still had models that showed up late, lighting problems, food and beverage problems, layout issues, but this is all normal. I think I'm officially starting to get the hang of it. 

Panicking during the heat of the moment was something I used to do. I think the grown up approach, was to take on each obstacle -- one at a time, and find the most logical solution. This is harder than it sounds, but do-able! I was pretty proud of myself. 

Even as I was making my closing speech, as the MC for the event, and the microphone decided to have a mind of it's own, making loud screeching noises, I was  completely at calm and still enjoyed every moment of it.

"I was made for loving you baby"

IT'S GO TIME. Runway, ready. Hair, done. Make-up, done. Models, ready. MC, in place. Music, on standby. Audience, naked. Wait... Naked?! The nightmares before an event had begun. I always tend to get nervous towards the build up of an event. As the nights progressed, the dreams got more erratic: models tripping (which is actually kind of funny in my head), music choice switched to ‘I was made for loving you baby’ by KISS – don’t ask why, hair & makeup shows up late and we decide - head banging for 20 minutes makes for ideal runway hair… None of this makes sense to me either.

On the 14th of July, we launched ‘Kanch’ by Kanchan Couture at VERO Lounge. It was fun, glamorous, fast paced, and hard work! I have attended fashion show events in the past. You go with your friends after work, have a few drinks, try the canapés, network, tip-toe on your shoes to get a glimpse of the clothes, and either head out to dinner or more drinks to finish off your night. Sounds pleasant… when you’re not working the event!

The night flew by in a blur and before we knew it, it was over. We gathered 300 of Hong Kong’s hippest, our friends, press, and fashion lovers. From the moment the doors opened, there was a light buzz of chatter in the air. There was Kanchan Couture staff flying around from one corner of the venue, to the other. A winding long line of guests waiting to get in. The scent of perfumes and chocolate in each breath of air, was thick. Before we could inhale, it started…

I pressed play from the back of the venue… The music started. Boom boom boom, I was concentrating on the tempo of the song. The crowd was dense. People had their hands in the air, taking photographs with their iphones and digital cameras. Professional photographers clicked away, the flashes bouncing off of the clothes and models. People watched. I ran to the edge of the runway. I made my way through the sea of viewers, who wouldn’t give up their viewing space, ready to make my thank you speech.

I have always appreciated my friends and family. And it is at these types of events, special occasions, and unique moments that you notice who your real friends are. I had personally invited via text message two or three people, whom I just wanted present. For reasons unsure, they were not able to attend. It did make me sad. However, as I was talking on the microphone, I searched the crowd for familiar faces. I saw the happy eyes of my friends who were there. It made me realize that there are friends who cared, loved and adored me. I love my friends who came to support me. I then imagined how Kanch felt on the night. Her feelings must have been a lot stronger, it was her event after all. Had everyone she had been expecting, attended?
Finale, Kanch walked down the runway…she looked so happy, her smile ran from ear to ear. Her mother, a muse in Kanch’s designs, watched and smiled with pride. It was over.

Back stage interviews and press photographers continued through the night, but it all felt like an outer body experience. It wasn’t until the next day I was able to process what had happened the night before. Anyone who has worked in events can tell you, no matter how many events you’ve worked on, the anxiousness before an event, never changes. You’re worrying about guest lists, equipment, stock, models, music, MC, venue, food, drink, etc, but at the same time, you’re fueled by the adrenaline and at the end of the night, it all seems to work out. My first fashion show, done.

Launch of 'Kanch' by Kanchan Couture at VERO Lounge

We are super excited for the launch of 'Kanch' by Kanchan Couture, at VERO Lounge next Wednesday. Our guest list has been filling up quick and we have a lot planned.

We can't wait to try the “Kanch Cocktail” by VERO Lounge’s mixologists and try all the freshly made chocolates and premium delicacies.

Kanch's fashion shows in the past have constantly attracted, socialites, local celebrities, as well as the 'who's - who' of Hong Kong, so we are really looking forward to seeing some old friends and making new ones. We hope that all of you can check out The Spring / Summer Collection of 2010, 'Kanch' by Kanchan Couture. Two Years On

In the last week or so I have been waking up with a feeling of butterflies in my stomach, it is a cross between excitement, nervousness and just plain exhaustion as the day to the show gets closer. It’s a crazy world wind of coordinating the arrival and feedback of samples for the new collection, casting models, planning the show and event logistics etc.

All this would have not been possible without the great people in my life. So I just want to say a BIG thank you to them all. Holger and Jane from uforepublic (www.uforepublic.com) for the amazing job they have done on the re-branding and unconditional hours of work. Danni from Guanxi for organizing the event, Tatler Magazine, Sarah from Sweet Secrets from the yummy cupcakes, Paul Gerrard for the time and energy in planning the hair and make-up for the show, PLAY for the venue and Sashay for the hats to go with the collection.

Last but not least Sharon for all the late nights, hard work, love and laughter…and off course my uber supporting family and lovely friends.

..The only moment we have

Usually sitting down to write the blog at the end of the week is a stress-less experience but for the last few weeks I have found myself feeling uninspired, continuing to put it off for another day. A long hard ponder later I came to the discovery that it was my chosen topic – Couture shows 2009.

Season after season patiently waiting to see what Galliano’s going to throw at us this year (he never fails to disappoint leaving us this season with romantic femininity from the old masters), What Lagerfeld is cooking up (he leaves us to ponder the beauty of the color white with intricate detailing) and what La Croix is going to “overload” us (he over stacked our imagination with layers of jewellery) with – each day waiting for the show images to come online, reading what our style guru’s are saying about the happenings at the show. Although I enjoy this on my own suddenly having to write about it, felt a sudden pressure, thus I decided to keep this as a personal ritual…and moved on to write about flowing and living in the present moment.

Talking to friends all around, it seems the world is wrapped up worrying about tomorrow, what the economy will bring, why they have family problems, why they cannot get along with their boyfriend/ girlfriend, what people are saying about them etc..I understand this is terrifying but I truly believe that life is perfect; you are never given more than you can handle and in the end it always seems to work out. No outcome is better or worse it is all just a matter of perception. Being human I too worry about how my business will survive in these times, what the next step is etc etc etc ..but then I look to the moment and focus on the present, as it is really all we have.

Now you might wonder what all this has to do with running a fashion business …well for me my moment of presence, where time and space do not matter, where life is perfect and my being is truly in the moment always seems to be backstage of a fashion show.

About an hour before light, camera, action…I find my heart’s pace quicken, people running around asking what to wear, what order they need to go in, the loud motor of the hairdryer, the paint palettes of the make-up artists ...the precious hours all dissolve into a short moment before the girls are out on the catwalk and it is soon all over…then it’s back to plotting a way for that kind of “present moment” to strike my life again.
