Shopping event!

Hello lovelies!

Yesterday was the shopping event at the American Club in Tai Tam which featured over 20 vendors of all types from home deco, jewellery, greetings cards and even a vendor specifically for funky clocks!

We got some great feedback and we had a lot of happy customers and everyone seemed to love our new Maka collection.

Usually when we go to these shopping events we try to understand the event and what type of people will show up so we can cater to their style, so we think about their age and look at past event pictures if we can to determine what to bring because of course we have A LOT of stock! Our Maka pieces start at a great price, around $200 and go up and over $10k which are all sterling silver or gold, adorned with beautiful precious and semi precious stones.

Check out our pictures from the event!

Guerilla Galleria

Last Sunday while Kanch was in India, Maria, Kanch's cousin and I woke up early and journeyed to a cool concept space called Fill In The Blank that hosts tons of different events from coffee making, fashion and beauty events such as creating your own organic lip balms and more.

We were approached by Sara from Sara's Henna to be a vendor for Guerilla Galleria amongst 9 other creative vendors.
The KC team were super excited for this event as it was the perfect timing to release our new collection: Maka by Kanchan Couture.
Kanch decided to create a collection that was a little different from our fashion jewellery and come out with more classic, timeless, elegant pieces made of 925 Silver and Gold with natural gemstones.

I love the variety Kanch created with these pieces, the price range is fantastic and theres so many different coloured gems to suit everyones style and stone sizes to suit wherever you're going, cocktail party, engagement party or just a lunch date.

We had so many wonderful compliments on the day about our new pieces and made some ladies very happy!

I want to thank FTB and Sara for hosting a wonderful event with great live music and unique and friendly vendors.

Stay tuned and follow our facebook page as we'll be participating in more events in the coming months to promote our new Maka line as well as weekly deals coming up in the next few weeks!!

Our Trip to PanYu

So on Wednesday Shivani, Kanch and I got up at the crack of dawn to catch our bus to Panyu which is about an hour from Guangzhou

We went with a suitcase containing 44 of our scarves..knowing what a mission this would be we were dreading it a bit. So first it was figuring out the settings on the camera - hard but once we read all the "how to" guides on the internet we were ready and left with some great shots! Mission accomplished. Great.

After two days of product shots we were ready to go home back to our Hong Kong headquarters - leaving the China office and off to flag a cab down. After waiting outside for at least 10 minutes, we started to stray away from our cab hailing and noticed there was a shop behind us, of course we went in to check it out! We saw some lovely maxi dresses and some gorgeous bags made from a really soft leather- LOVE! (Note to self. Bring more RMB next time)

After 30 odd honks while trying to catch a taxi we got one- results! In under 10 mins we got to the bus stop where we catch the bus to the Shenzhen boarder, right on time for the 7:15 pm but just our luck it was full - great we thought, would we make it home tonight? Luckily there was an 8:30pm bus (the last bus to HK) so this left us plenty of time to go do "touristy" things for an hour. We walked around a few malls all connected together by a large circular bridge.

Walking into the first mall, Shivani said, “this looks like an Indian mall” and I said “looks like a Thai mall!” I guess it wasn't quite a culture shock as we were still in China but it was lovely to get out of Hong Kong and go somewhere different- business and pleasure of course!

Walking through the streets we could feel all the stares on us, they all looked like they had never seen foreigners before! I remember walking through this indoor outdoor mall and seeing this sign- a shop called “Y PAY MORE?” Shivani and I could not stop laughing... What a perfect name for a store in Mainland China!!! To be honest Shivani and I could not get ourselves to go in. We noticed that most of the stores were a little more expensive than Hong Kong and carried a lot of the same things.

We also went to this shop that had a Zara/H&M feel to it. We went directly up to level 2- the ladies section, it was horrible!!! We walked around the store so fast, picking up nothing to have a second look and RAN back down stairs. There were actually no customers inside, quite surprising considering its size- it was HUGGE!! Wonder how they pay their rent?

We then had to time ourselves because the last bus for the night was the one we intended to catch, so if it had not left we would have been stranded, scary thought!! So we power walked through the mall like 2 crazy lady foreigners and as we did this scanned through the rest of the mall just incase we did find that perfect dress - then the stay might be worth it.

We made a quick stop at 7/11 buying only that to fuel our sugar levels - sour skittles and m&m’s.

Needless to say our window shopping trip was fun, there were some great skirts and dresses and we'll definitely be back soon!

Zai Jian Da Jia!

Love, Petra

Addicted to the Net

Last week and this week, I feel like I’m, Annie Das – Sales & Marketing / IT Expert! I’ve been updating, tweaking, adding, editing, changing, playing, researching, anything and everything to do with websites and web-shopping!

Our favorite webshop is hands down, Net-a-porter (no wonder they were bought for a lumpsum of $$$, they got it right -- meticulous to the T!) What goes into creating a webshop? It’s tedious, a lot of attention to detail, basically making sure the nitties and gritties are dealt with so that everyone can understand what it is you’re trying to sell and what makes your "stuff" different?

I’ve been challenging my creativity, thinking of unique names, lustful descriptions and have been researching the art of making a product appealing, an old school art I have re-named “Sales Meditation”.

Sales Meditation, you look at the product, you feel the product, you close your eyes and think about the product, and then put your brains to the test. So maybe I don’t do this for each item, but whilst typing, I am often caught with my eyes closed thinking – not sleeping, promise! Kanch should be happy that I've taken each product to a religious level of marketing.

Our webshop (site to be disclosed on our newsletter, click here to sign up) is scheduled to launch this Friday, and while I know that our webshop enters us into a league of many other stores, I realized something. For the people who work all the time (a.k.a – me,) online shopping is ideal! I get to shop in the comfort of my own home, they can deliver to my home or office, not to mention – DISCOUNTS! Every website has their perks, where I might have only ever shopped from ebay, and amazon, creating and working on webshops last few weeks has opened my eyes to a whole new world of fashion and how fun it actually is to buy, make and explore online. One stop shop, one click away...

Post note: Something interesting -- It's all about Digital IQ. A few years ago, using Facebook and Twitter for marketing / business purposes might have seemed crazy -- Business of Fashion lists luxury fashion brands with high digital IQ, happy reading! **Image from http://blogs.smarter.com/blogs/guests/online-shopping-cartoon.jpg

When in Europe...

When in Europe … do the – shopping! Boutiques in Europe have razzle-dazzled us with their unique designers and inspired us with their thirst for creativity. Kanch had a great time in Europe and we look forward to going back next year. As the number of boutiques that stock Kanchan Couture grow, we wanted to give you all a sneak peek at some photos we took of our stockists during our trip:

Annie says, ‘Kanch, along with other designers had a trunk show at this Asian fusion concept store, and from the photos, it looked like a great mixture of people showed up to check out and appreciate the different designer clothes.
I really wish there was a place like this in Hong Kong!’

With the economy still picking itself up, people are buying less and looking for pieces that are great for everyday wear. I read an article on the Business of Fashion Website, and people have started to notice that even big name brands like Gucci, Prada, Louis Vuitton, are all making wallet friendly pieces. What remains, with the fashion forward – people have made sure to leave room in their closets for fun pieces, which has left many boutiques looking for interesting designers with a fresh look.

Hong Kong needs more boutiques that flaunt designer clothes. Why Europe is ahead in it’s fashion trends, is because they are not afraid to experiment, not afraid of trying new looks – this thirst for fashion is what is missing from Hong Kong. Superbrand shopping, albeit make divine clothes as well, but I’m sick of going to cocktails, birthday parties, any event in general – and spotting someone wearing the same or similar outfit as me but in a different color.

Without sounding like a plug, Kapok is one of the few boutiques in Hong Kong that caters -- designer wear for people wanting fashion forward flair. What Hong Kong needs, more Designer boutiques! How do we get it? Not quite sure yet, but in the mean time my eyes are still going to search for cool trendy boutiques that give me a sense of euro…

Shanghai is not like Hong Kong. People might not necessarily understand the importance of personal space here, people stare at me like I'm the only Indian person they have ever seen, and riding the METRO...let's just visualize a 'sardine can' and amuse ourselves with the image of an indian girl dead in the middle of it!

What brought me here? We exhibited Kanchan Couture's finest demi-couture and bridal collections at the Shanghai Expo, 2010 - with a foot traffic guestimate of over 400,000 people per day! Since we were here, we decided to meet with boutiques, shopping malls, designers, work on some collaborations and also do some good old fashion market research.

Some of Shanghai's best fashions are found in the nooks and crevices of artsy districts, hidden away inside buildings, or out boasting onto the streets of the French Concession, Xin Tian Di, Nanjing, Peoples Square, Pudong..the places are limited and endless at the same time...Go to Shanghai, you'll know what i mean!

Coming to Shanghai for work has been a great learning experience. I know a few things didn't go the way that we had planned, but the people I've met and the sights I've seen along the way, will continue to bring me back to Shanghai...

Favorite Restuarant: Nanxiang- Shanghai Dumpling Restuarant, Crystal Jade has some competition!
Favorite Area to Hangout: Xin Tian Di
Favorite Shopping Centre: Raffles City
Favorite Street-wear: The Source
Fun local brand of clothes that I wish was in Hong Kong: ONLY
Morning Ritual: Coffee Bean!

More than just a shop

With so many shops to choose from and so many products out there how does one choose where to go or what to buy? Yes, we can be swayed and influenced by large scale marketing and advertising campaigns, however now I think the times are changing and even boutiques without large advertising budgets are attracting the consumers. How, you may ask? Through enhancing the whole experience for their customer. It is no longer just about shopping; the successful shops are moving beyond traditional boutiques and becoming so much more.

The Dressing Room on Manhattan’s Lower East Side would appear to be a fairly standard retail store, with a boutique on one level and vintage-clothing exchange on another. However, what sets it apart from the norm is the full bar on their ground floor level. If you visit this unique boutique on any given night, you’ll find regulars sipping drinks, listening to the occasional DJ set, catching a movie projected on a small screen and browsing through racks of clothes. This store creates a neighbourhood hangout for its clients, a place for people to sit and have a drink. Ultimately this is a clothing store with a difference and the sense of community associated with this store not only brings people in, but encourages them to stay and peruse the goods on offer.

This bar-shop concept store is just one example of a retailer getting creative with their space to attract traffic. Yes big department stores such as Debenhams in the UK have been providing consumers with a ‘one-stop-shop’ for many years, with cafĂ©’s and even hairdressers located within their four walls. However, the small boutiques are offering something that even these big stores can’t: an atmosphere, an environment, an experience, and a destination.
Saturday’s in New York’s Soho district is a surf shop that serves coffee and beer in its back garden and my gran’s favourite small boutique in the North of England sells home furnishings and trinkets in the front of the store and features a quaint coffee shop (with the best cakes in town) in the back. Both stores cleverly guide customers through the goods on sale before they sit down to enjoy their refreshments.

In my opinion, personal service, a warm welcome and a chance to sit with friends, drink, shop, listen to music and relax will truly be the future of retail. People like to feel they belong to something and these intimate, bar/coffee-shop concept stores provide a haven for consumers to relax and enjoy.

We believe Kanchan Couture is no exception. We've organised many after hours events with a difference for our clients. My particular favourite was the fabulous henna and fashion fusion event we held in collaboration with SarasHenna (see picture above). With our regular champagne evenings and personal service, we hope all our consumers enjoy their experience with us and like to come back time and time again.

Right now we are taking bookings for free individual 30 minute viewing and styling appointments with Kanch for a new collection of ready to wear clothing we are launching. To thank our customers, we want to ensure each person is given the time and treatment we think they deserve, so book one of your personal sessions now.

Details:
17th, 18th, 19th May from 10am to 8pm

Let the games begin…

As the shows roll on in Paris…the chatter seems to be all about the retail shopping experience, the recession barren consumer and the price war.

All we have to do is take a look around and it is fairly simple to understand why shopping has lost it’s luster. Big global brands are spreading out their wings tampering in a little bit of too much but nothing at all, the high street is now monotonous, no one wants to be wearing the same and the small and unique are being swept away. It will be a battle to re-invigorate shopper, who will win? Those that offer a fresh, new shopping experience along with quality and service. Items that are made with a story, with love and presence will conquer. A great example this is a new philanthropic store in Paris called Merci. The owner Marie France will choose and sell only items she likes and all profits will go a charity.

With times of recession comes times of change and therefore most businesses will have to look out for the changes in the behavior of their consumer. The smartest and surviving companies will be the ones that read their consumer and quick to adapt. Every thing in life seems to move in cycles and so does the consumer, we have become a rather over consuming world, buying more then we could ever use and need. Thus the new shopper does not want more “stuff” but rather an experience they can remember and share with their family and friends.

A lot to be said for the price war that begun at the end of last year with all the U.S stores putting goods on sale starting in November, this created a difficult situation for designer stores, as Suzy Menkes said “ The problem is not really about the price on the ticket but an attitude of the mind”. Many consumers say it will now be hard for them to pay the full price ticket on a designer garment when they know by waiting they can get it at least half off. Often people forget they too have a business to run.

To me…. it seems a difference between price and value. The price of a garment could be quite low but the value quite high. Often we make decisions whilst only considering the price and later realize the value is what is truly important. A relationship whether it be with a garment, a person or anything else that matters to us should always be considered from the perspective of what value it provides us before we decide on whether to pay the price. The price will become irrelevant; the value will always be what matters.

As Galliano said “It is a credit crunch not a creative crunch”……..so leave us to create!!
