It's ALL about the Accessories

We’ve been in the drawing room working on next season’s accessories. When creating accessories, designers have to think of everything. Working here with Kanch, I get a bit more insight into what she takes into consideration.

Monday morning this week was sunny, bright, beautiful. First thing on the agenda for our fashion forward designer was a trip to Hong Kong’s hub for material and textile sourcing…Lai Chi Kok & Sham Shui Po...

For those of you who are not from Hong Kong reading this, Sham Shui Po and Lai Chi Kok are dense districts filled with wholesalers selling fabrics, buttons, leathers, upholstery, feathers, anything from shell pieces to precious stones and silks can be found here. Kanch spent about two hours in this ocean of countless creative opportunities and came back with some gorgeous colored, textured and patterned leathers.

This time we want some feedback from you! We have narrowed our choices down to different sets of leathers and colors that we like.

Tell us which one you like and email us: info@kanchancouture.com

Souk In The City

Designer markets provide a platform for emerging artists and designers to showcase their work to the general public in a relaxed, market environment. It enables young talent to display their works and the public to purchase unique items that cannot be found commercially. For the designers, these markets often form the first step towards growth and commercialization of their design range, whether it’s fashion, jewelry, craft or art.

Designer markets are the best place to find hidden gems from up and coming designers and a great place to buy affordable, original, home grown designs right from the designers themselves. These markets are cropping up all across the globe. From Brisbane to London to New York, designers are showing their works with the hope of kick-starting their design careers.

Kanch was in New York this month and had the opportunity to show pieces from our collection at The Market NYC. This young designers market is located right in the heart of Soho and is a buzz of creativity from young emerging talent. It was a fantastic experience and we had really positive feedback from buyers.

We hate that there’s no designers market in Hong Kong. With so many talented young people in this city, you would hope there would be a place they could go to get their work out there. Having said that, occasionally opportunities do arise for designers to showcase their work in a temporary market environment. Examples include the Random Art Workshop’s quarterly RAW Marketplace event that brings together various vendors selling unique handmade products and Detour 2009, which created a unique platform for local, up-and-coming creative talents to showcase their work to the public, as well as to engage the community’s creative energy, providing an engaging environment for artists, designers and the creative public to congregate and interact.

However, these events are not very regular, so when they do arise, we jump at the opportunity to take part! Luckily for us, the Sassy girls (lovers of all things fashion and fun) have decided to host the ultimate designer market. ‘Souk In The City’ is being hailed as the ultimate girls night out with a fabulous array of local designers, artists, manicurists and our favourite henna tattooist Sara from Saras Henna, all there to help create the perfect night of shopping and socializing.

This event should be loads of fun and will hopefully introduce more lovely ladies to our accessories and new ready to wear collection. If you’re wondering what to do this Wednesday 19th then come along to ‘Souk in the City’ at The Langham hotel, TST. The event is free but alas, the clothes are not, so bring your credit cards and cash, and enjoy special discounts for this one night only!

And the games begin…

Today is the first day of the grand MasterCard luxury fashion week in Hong Kong, and being a young designer it is always interesting to go along to the events and see how the big brands are doing their thing.

Intriguing to learn from the more experienced....so I went along to the briefing by Proff Michel Phan which talked of << The Luxury Industry: Lessons Learnt from Past Crises.>>

Luxury is a magical world......with the uber chic-ly dressed guests , the paparazzi snapping away and the perfectly adorned ball room where the event is held makes me strive harder so that one day in the near future Kanchan Couture will too be able to hold these events.

Wanted to share some wise learnings from Dr.Phan.

Four Key Strategies adopted by the major luxury groups during a crisis:

1. Develop its retail network through new stores openings and / or refurbishing in key strategic locations/ cities
2. Launch of new products to continuously stimulate consumer demand
3. Improve financial health by cutting costs, creating greater efficiencies and savings and better managing logistics / supply chain
4. Diversify into strategic but complementary businesses, or acquire greater control of current businesses.

Keep pushing ahead was the main message I took away...looking forward to the week full of events!!

Long Live Luxury!!

Chocolate Couture

A dear friend of mine and chocolate expert Francesca was launching her own chocolate label in Hong Kong and asked if I would be interested in collaborating to come out with a line of Chocolate couture. Immediately this got my mouth watering and eyes sparkling. I had this idea run through my head in December just before Christmas but could not find the right collaborator and now it had just fallen in my lap! So we were on a our…….

The collaboration includes a series of ladies nights at L’atelier de Kanch and the launch of the ‘Chocolate Couture’ gift, for a modest but fabulous indulgence. We had our first successful night on the 4th of Feb at the L’atelier and then moved on to putting together an event for the press
and our VIP customers at M1nt.

The evening was filled with chocolates, champagne, beautiful Spanish red wine, a fashion show and lots of laughter.

The chocolate Couture gift, a box of 16 Delicious Swiss Hand Made Pralines Presented in a Limited Edition, Hand Printed Silk, Bag for only $338 HKD.

…Kool Kuala Lumpur

With just three weeks into the year I seem to find myself to be sitting at airports or on planes a lot pondering life or the happenings of the recent trip. A few weeks ago I got an email from a production company in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia asking if I would come and be part of a TV Champaign where I would have to talk about my inspiration and how Europe had influenced my career as a Fashion designer…and so a few weeks later I was in KL.

Not knowing what to except of the place or the people other then the little research I did on the weather, which helped me, pack appropriately….30 degrees Celsius and sunny, who wouldn’t be excited?

Stepping off the plane I was whizzed of the studios to meet with the clients (the TV Channel) and the production team, the wardrobe was chosen and I given questions to answer about my inspirations etc that was eventually turned into my script. The day ended with a crew dinner where we all loosed up having a drink and talking about the coming days.

The next three days were filled with filming and a photo shoot. Although the pieces that was being filmed was merely a few seconds, a whole lot of work went into the set up of lights, camera and all the action. Made me grow a newfound respect for Hollywood and Bollywood, where the movies are hours long. I cannot begin to imagine what it takes to put together a full-length featured film.

Hours of hair and make-up, 60 takes, laughing / quarreling with the director, 500 photographs and several poses later…voila there we had all the raw cuts needed. Working on projects like this gets my heart beat racing and a twinkle in my eye… the excitement, energy, buzz of people and how everyone supported one another made this particular project a fun adventure.

In the mist of all this I had an afternoon off thus decided to take a quick tour of the city soaking in some sun and culture….the first stop was the Batu Caves and famous Hindu temple where I got chased by a wild monkey, next was the Batik making factory where they showed us how the ancient art of Batik was done, the pewter factor, a range of shops ending at the PETRONAS towers. Which I was informed are the largest towers in the world, the tallest single building is in Dubai.

The process of making Batik was the most interesting as my mind started to tick about how I could incorporate it into my next collection.

The process:

_A piece of white or dyed silk is stretched by two sticks on either side holding it up; next a pattern is drawn using a pencil
_Then a little tool called a “Chanting” (a little copper bowl with a spout attached to a wood or bamboo handle) is filled with a mixture of hot wax + resin and used to trace the drawing that were first done in pencil
_Fabric paint is used to fill in the areas that need to be colored in (the wax stops the colored ink from spreading)
_Once it is dry the fabric is put in a bucket of chemical fixatives making the color “fast” or permanent
_Lastly the wax is washed away as the fabric is boiled in a mixture of ashes and chemicals

After 3 days of work and lots of fun... leaving new friends, long hours of standing in front of the green screen, hot weather, palm trees and the beautiful Malay hospitality was hard…well its all in the name of fashion!

Kanchan Couture New Campaign

Distant Pasts Photo Shoot

With Jeffie in Tow and a suitcase of fashion we headed off to Chai Wan after temptation to work together again was just too irresistible. We had a fantastic if not strange day with bipolar security guards, getting kicked out of buildings and factory locations.

Santa's Suprise

A lovely surprise …this year it looks like Santa heard my wishes early and brought my creative soul mate and best friend back from London to surprise me. As he casually walked into the studio the neighbors heard me scream “Jeffie!!.”

We speedily caught up on the happenings of the last four months and both hungry to create something new chose a date for our next photo shoot…here we go again models, hair, make-up, lights and action!! Before we get carried away we both decided a brainstorm for concept etc was important.

My three favorite ad champagnes For the moment:

Mixing all our ideas together creating a new world, our world, a world where we have no boundaries and are free.

Planning ahead we moved on to how we would promote this shoot around Hong Kong and which magazines we would both love to be a part of. I continued to ramble on about Vogue China, Tatler etc as Jeffie excitedly started talking about our first billboard located on the escalator on Wellington Street.

I definitely owe my life to Alex, billboard maestro, a dear friend and director of TCOB Media, they are the most creative media agency around, if you saw that giant rugby ball around town during the Bledisloe cup…yep that was them. Recently they have come up with a great concept of a billboard “share” where more than one company can be displayed, this is great for the smaller companies out there who don’t have a gazillion dollar advertising budget.

Back to gossiping with Jeffie about being famous together, who we would invite to our parties and our penthouse in Paris, l’atelier in Berlin and yacht in St. Tropez.

Simply cheesy….but at the end of the hours filled with banter on love, life and London town my heart felt warm and cozy just to know that there will always be some friends whom you pick up just where you left off and that sparks of creativity and inspiration fill the room as soon as you connect….watch out, we’re brewing up a storm, Untitled Stories II, coming summer 2009!!!
